Activity 3.1 - Human Population
Human Population Demographic
Today I chose to compare two very different Countries, one of which I reside in myself. I felt that by living and growing up in North America, I'd have an easier time giving an insight perspective to the data provided by the "2021 World Population Sheet". While this data can be intimidating at first, I enjoy how simplistic it is in reality. I find myself being very unaware of my own Country and purposefully uneducated mostly because I'm a lazy westerner. On that note I've noticed that term "lazy westerner" or simply "westerner" being thrown around more recently. Especially on social media by other countries simply mocking the lack of education present in western countries but more specifically in the U.S. I myself fall into this category. I'm not saying I'm a dumb individual more so uneducated in things that don't directly affect me, much like my fellow Americans. I think the main reason is how privileged we are living in America, we easily take advantage things other countries don't have access to. Which brings me to my first point, something as straightforward as a birth rate sounds so undemanding to understand that it can easily be left on the surface level. However when broken down, we can start to evaluation the developmental structure of a country. You'd think a more developed country would have a higher birth rate but it's actually quite the opposite, while a more developed country has the better means to nurture and raise offspring. It doesn't always mean they want to, you have to account for things like birth control, dietary issues affecting the reproductive system, or a more taboo category your sexual orientation. Which in some countries can unfortunately cost you your life. Compared to a country like Western Africa, who has a much higher birth rate. Now that's not what automatically considers them to be a less developed country, there's other factors at play that solidifies it's categorization. Such as the Gross National Income, which in simple terms is the average gross income of a country's population. The table clearly shows, Western Africa to have a GNI of $4,154, which is far less than the monthly average of the American populations yearly income. Which makes it far more difficult to feed and provide shelter for your family, let alone yourself in a country like Western Africa. This assignment truly helped me further understand how fortunate we are to live a place like the United States, while we are far from a perfect country I know have further understanding of what causes our country to be this successful.
Country Name | Birth Rate | Death Rate | Population Growth | Life expectancy Male | Life expectancy Female | Fertility Rate | GNI |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Northern America | 11 | 10 | 0.1 | 75 | 81 | 1.6 | $64,417 |
Western Africa | 37 | 10 | 2.7 | 58 | 60 | 5.1 | $4,154 |
World | 18 | 8 | 1.0 | 71 | 75 | 2.3 | $17,535 |
